Timestamp syntax rules to remember
- Seconds, not milliseconds: Unix timestamps in Discord must be 10 digits (seconds). A 13-digit millisecond value will cause Discord to print raw text.
- Angle brackets matter: The syntax requires literal
<and>brackets with no spaces inside. - Default style: If you omit the format letter and write
<t:1735689600>, Discord automatically renders it using thef(Short Date/Time) style. - Viewer-local: Discord handles the timezone conversion on each reader's device. Everyone sees the moment in their own clock.
Picking the right format for the job
The seven codes are not interchangeable, and most of the time one of them is clearly right. If you are announcing something that hasn't happened yet, R gives you a live Discord countdown timestamp that keeps ticking without an edit. For a formal event announcement where the weekday matters, F produces a full date and day-of-week timestamp. When the date is already obvious from context — a daily reset, a recurring raid slot — t gives you a time-only timestamp with no date.
If you are coordinating across regions and want to check what a given moment looks like elsewhere before you post it, the Discord timezone converter lets you build the code from any zone rather than your own.
